Kairos

Nov 7 -21, 2009

"Kairos" is the theme for the upcoming show at H. Kazan Fine Arts. The exhibition presents the recent works of eight artists: Alina, Pauline Argyriou, Kaloust Guedel, Kiki, Lark (Larisa Pilinsky), Sev and Zareh. In addition, the gallery is pleased to present a guest painter, Gabriele Schoene, from Vienna, Austria. They all share a belief that most viewers, in the search to discover something new, mysterious or extraordinary look to  the artist to open doors for them. But what is the "extraordinary" ?

Ancient Greeks thought of the ordinary passage of time, incessant, impersonal and non-negotiable-as belonging to the god Kronos, from whose name the term "Chronology" is drawn. But the Greeks realized that not all time is ordinary. They reserved the term "Kairos," for special time; moments when something extraordinary punctuates the ordinary passage of time, the mundane existence.  Similarly, Celtic mythology speaks about "Thin Places" where the visible and the invisible come in closest contact.

Most artists are familiar with the moments of sudden connection, where the visible and the invisible meet, to be captured and expressed- a reminder of the numinous and magical forces that connect us with the unknown, a world that at heart is one. In the words of Plato: "First a shudder runs through you, and then the old awe steals you."

The upcoming show presents these rare moments of mystical and magical experiences of each artist participant transformed in their own visual language. They are all unique although the source is one.
